How Did We Do?: Lyrics as Poetry

I received 42 responses to this weekends "Lyrics as Poetry" blog assignment.

Congrats to the 42 who took the time to complete it.

A bit of feedback to the quality of the work I received:

  • Most people chose lyrics that certainly did include some great poetic devices! One student even mentioned allusions, which we covered in Friday's class- bravo!

  • In regards to the explanations, nearly all of them need a lot of work. A sentence such as "It included a metaphor" is not a sufficient high school response. You should be identifying the metaphor and including the line in your response. Then you should be explaining the significance of the metaphor!

  • Push yourselves! General, unexplained statements do not not reveal real higher level thinking, which all of you are capable of. "I chose this poem because it has a lot of meaning." This was a very common explanation. If you were a teacher, how would you feel about that answer? Explain, explain, explain!

Bravo again on the effort, and let's shoot for greatness next time!!!

  1. Space Bound by Eminem

    I'm a space-bound rocketship and your heart's the moon
And I'm aimin' right at you
    Right at you
250,000 miles on a clear night in June
And I'm aimin' right at you
Right at you, Right at you

This verse is a lot like a poem. It rhymes, but it also uses metaphors. He is comparing himself to a rocketship and the girl he likes to the moon. He says, "I'm a space-bound rocketship and your heart's the moon." The meaning of this is he's on a mission to her heart so she will like him. When he says "250,000 miles on a clear night in June," that is his attempt at making her fall in love with him.

  2. MOVE ALONG- All American Rejects
Go ahead as you waste your days with thinking
    When you fall everyone stands
Another day and you've had your fill of sinking
With the life held in your
    Hands are shaking cold
These hands are meant to hold

Speak to me, when all you got to keep is strong
Move along, move along like I know you do
And even when your hope is gone
Move along, move along just to make it through
    Move along
    Move along

So a day when you've lost yourself completely
Could be a night when your life ends
Such a heart that will lead you to deceiving
All the pain held in your
    Hands are shaking cold
Your hands are mine to hold

Speak to me, when all you got to keep is strong
Move along, move along like I know you do
And even when your hope is gone
Move along, move along just to make it through
    Move along
(Go on, go on, go on, go on)

When everything is wrong we move along
(Go on, go on, go on, go on)
When everything is wrong, we move along
    Along, along, along

When all you got to keep is strong
Move along, move along like I know you do
And even when your hope is gone
Move along, move along just to make it through
    [x3]

    (Move along)
(Go on, go on, go on, go on)
    Right back what is wrong
    We move along

I like this song because when I am feeling under the weather ,and had enough of life and its burrdens I listin to this song and helps me get through whatever issue I am dealing with at the time. My favortie verse is "When all you got to keep is strong
Move along, move along like I know you do
And even when your hope is gone
Move along, move along just to make it through." I love this particalur verse because it is so true when all hope is gone still push forward to make it through life, and evenaully youll make it and be ok.

  3. Throughout the whole song of "Two Hearts in True Waltz Time", the writer displays many poetic devices. For example, a simile can be found in line 1 of paragraph 3 stating,"She rides like Caesar brandishing a whip" which demonstrates the characters wildly personality; suggesting that she is whipping around an object of some sort. There are two alliteration examples within the lyrics such as, "As the siren wails she silently sails" (found in paragraph 3 line 3) and "Smoke streams from the street" (found in paragraph 2 line 5). Both of these examples prove how a dull song scene can be lightened up with just the repetition of a few sounds. A final poetic enhancer is a line of imagery found on lines 7, 8, 9 of the last paragraph," So he sings a little song, and in a chiffon sarong, she performs a black ballet in space." Just to picture all of these little pieces combing together to form one collection of beautiful descriptions really made a painted picture inside my head as I continued to read the lyrics. The way that this song really sent out a message was that it proves how people will do things they know is wrong, intentionally, in order to squeeze every drop of juice out of life. This is what I think is the cause of divorces, job loses, and other personal negatives which can really corrupt a person’s life. Also, little details implied behind the lines such as "Well the first frame finds her running. But the night pushes her deep within the tunnel...” (first 2 lines) allows room for personal interpretation which I think reading poems are all about.

  4. the whole song is a metaphor for what happens to your life when you do drugs.
    "taste me you will see
    more is all you need
    dedicating to
    how i'm killing you"
is a metaphor for how you can't stop once you've started and that you dedicate your life to the drugs, which is also killing you.
    "come crawling faster
    obey your master
    your life burns faster
    obey your master"
is a metaphor for how you need the drugs, and the more you do, the more you throw your life away.
"master, master, where's the dreams that i've been afer?
master, master, you promised only lies
laughter, laughter, all i hear or see is laughter
laughter, laughter, laughing at my cries"
this is a metaphor that shows that drugs destroy your dreams and never do any good.

I chose these song lyrics because they are very touching and meaningful and I can really connect to them. These song lyrics also show many different kinds of poetic devices in them, including many similes. One simile is, "She listens like spring and she talks like June, hey, hey." He is saying that she really listens very well and tht when she talks it is one of the most beautiful voices in the world.

  6. :Your only as tall as your heart will let you be
And your only as small as the world will make you seem
When the going gets rough and you feel like you may fall
Just look on the brightside your roughly six feet tall" -on the brightside NeverShout!Never

This Is very poetic and i chose it because it is also inspiring. there are two rhyming couplets. Also, like a poem , it shows a clear message its trying to get across. In this case its saying "You are who you believe you are." Or saying, if you don't give yourself credit, the world isnt going to give you credit either. It also uses a similie, comparing being 6 feet tall, to being confident. Meaning, if you picture someone who is really tall, they always walk with confidence, and so there saying even if your short, if you put in the effort, you can walk with confidence too.

  7. "What have I got to do to make you love me
What have I got to do to make you care
What do I do when lightning strikes me
And I wake to find that you're not there

What do I do to make you want me
What have I got to do to be heard
What do I say when it's all over
Sorry seems to be the hardest word"
-Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word, Elton John

I just feel like when I write out these lyrics, they LOOK like a poem. There's the rhyme scheme, ABABACDC, and the repetition at the beginning of each line of "What have I got to do" and "What do I do." These lyrics are very meaningful and poetic in the respect that everyone's been where this song goes. How someone keeps trying and trying to show that they're sorry, but they can't actually come out and say it. That theme is very relatable. Though this is only a piece of the song, the entire thing feels like a poem to me. As do a lot of other pieces by Elton John.

  8. I chose the chorus lyrics to the song "Giving Up The Gun" by Vampire Weekend:

"Your sword’s grown old and rusty
    Burnt beneath the rising sun
It’s locked up like a trophy
Forgetting all the things it’s done

And though it’s been a long time
You’re right back where you started from
I see it in your eyes
That now you’re giving up the gun"

I feel the most significant poetic device present in these lyrics is metaphor, as the entire first verse is a metaphor that could symbolize the subject's deteriorating bravery or valor. The lyrics also have a simile in the third line of the first verse, comparing the subject's bravery to a trophy locked in a trophy case, untouched and only useful to reflect upon, but not to utilize. The lyrics have a rhyme scheme, as well: A B C B, which continues throughout the song.

  9. "While we're on the subject, could we change the subject now?
I was knocking on your ear but you were always out.
Looking towards the future, we were begging for the past,
Well we knew we had the good things but those never seemed to last." -Modest Mouse

I chose these lyrics from the song "Missed the Boat" by Modest Mouse for a couple of reasons. For one thing, they contain the rhyme scheme: ABCC. Also, in the second line, the poetic device known as a metaphor comparing an ear with a door was used. This metaphor, once interpretted, explains that he feels that the person whom he is speaking about doesn't listen to him. Also, the last two lines in the lyrics show that he feels that things are going downhill, and he liked the way things were before. Therefore, taking all of this into consideration, I feel that these lyrics could be considered poetic.
